These delicious Latin American treats, originating from Colombia and Venezuela, are made with pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa), cheese, butter, and milk.   • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal masarepa (white or yellow)
  • 1 ½ cups warm milk or water
  • 1 cup shredded cheese queso blanco, mozzarella, or Oaxaca cheese
  • 1 tbsp butter melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Optional Fillings & Toppings
  • Extra butter for serving
  • Sour cream
  • Avocado slices
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Salsa Roja for extra flavor!

Instructions
 

  • 1️⃣ Prepare the Dough
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa) and salt.
  • Slowly add warm milk (or water) while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  • Knead the dough with your hands until it becomes smooth and pliable. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
  • 2️⃣ Add the Cheese
  • Mix in shredded cheese and melted butter.
  • Knead the dough again until the cheese is evenly distributed.
  • 3️⃣ Shape the Arepas
  • Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a ½-inch thick disc.
  • 4️⃣ Cook the Arepas
  • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  • Cook the arepas for 5-6 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Press them lightly with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  • 5️⃣ Serve and Enjoy!
  • Spread with butter for extra richness.
  • Serve with scrambled eggs, avocado, or fresh salsa.

Notes

Use warm milk or water for a softer texture.
Don’t overwork the dough—it should be soft but not sticky.
For extra cheesiness, add cheese in the dough AND inside the arepas before cooking.
Experiment with fillings like ham, shredded chicken, or beans.
